Some notes on prawns

When I was studying in secondary school, one of the subjects I had taken up was Biology. I wasn't even vaguely interested in Biology. The reason I had taken it up was that I had a problem with the other subject that I was supposed to take.

That being the case, my results in Biology weren't very good. If I recall correctly, I scored between 60-70 in any written test or examination for Biology.

While it has been many years since I've read up on any biological, and morphological information on any species on the planet, I was piqued by the conversation on Christmas Eve to read up on one of the food I was eating: prawns.

And below is a graphical image of how to distinguish freshwater prawns from other prawns.

How do you recognise the sex of a prawn? Is it male or is it female? The graphic shows it clearly. A prawn is male if there's a small lump at the first segment of it's body.

And, the ovaries of a female prawn is clearly illustrated below.

So, according to these information, when you're sucking out the really juicy part of the prawn from it's head, it's actually the sperm or eggs of a prawn that you're eating. Hmm... The number of eggs varies anywhere from 80,000 to 100,000. (wow!)

Sources of information

A bad experience in my youth when I was between 3-7 years old led me to boycott prawns for more than a decade, until I met Kelvin Khoo, Edwin Tey (or is it Edwin Teh) in the last stages of my teenage years. My designation at that time was 6:600/608 for those of you familiar with the terminology.
