Yesterday, I went to see what the client wanted for their Linux LDAP solution. Seems that they wanted to share files on their Red Hat Enterprise server using Samba and they wanted a single sign-on capability with LDAP.
As a private solutions consultant, I provide all kinds of services, ranging from troubleshooting machines, networks, removing viruses for home users, and I was preparing the proposal yesterday, and also wanted to see how complicated the process would be, so I set up (again) Mandrake Linux on the laptop. This is after having set up Windows 98 on the laptop nearly 2-3 days ago. Man... ISTM that installing OSes is becoming a weekly affair for me.
FWIW, my home network consists of a Symantec Nexland network device, my web, ftp, mail and blog server, and the laptop itself. Seeing that the number of machines required is insufficient, I called Francis up yesterday and met up with him at the Woodlands coffeeshop at Blk 515.
I fiddled with the setup until about 4am this morning before I went to sleep.
He agreed to lend me a laptop, and I signed a lease agreement, returning him the laptop tomorrow.
Today, after realizing that Mandrake Linux is too dissimilar from Red Hat Linux, I attempted to purchase a copy of Fedora off eBay. Unfortunately, the seller cannot make it, so about 6.30pm, after calling my brother to check if he's available to drive me there (unfortunately, no), I took the MRT down to Sim Lim. Reached Sim Lim at about 7.30pm, and looked around. They're selling Red Hat Workstation with Office for $119. Dammit, I wanted something cheap. I couldn't afford to download the 4 CDs because that would take 12 hours, and I don't have 12 hours. So I bought the Australian Linux Journal which comes with the complete Red Hat Linux 9.0 for $16.90.
I've just finished the installation, which took about 1 hour. So, I'll now work on the LDAP and Samba stuff.
Out, out, brief candle!
