What do you understand of diversity? What do I understand of diversity? Tolerance, intolerance, acception or rejection of others dissimiliar from us? In “Is there in truth, no beauty?”, an IDIC medallion is worn by first officer, Starship Enterprise, Spock.
IDIC is an acronym for Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations, first coined by Gene Roddenberry for his show, Star Trek.
For all, or most of us Singaporeans, racial diversity is something we accept. In fact, racial diversity is something that the government of Singapore projects. However, sexual practise diversity is something that the government of Singapore rejects, or partially tolerates though. It is my opinion that individuals who have expressed a liking towards members of the same sex (ie, lesbians, gays) would never be placed in a position of power or authority by the Singapore Government. These individuals would never be representative of the general population of Singapore.
Yet, it is possible, though, that the situation might change. Indeed, PM Lee said in his maiden National Day Rally 2004 speech that “People say if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I say, if it ain't broke, better maintain it, lubricate it, inspect it, replace it, upgrade it, try something better and make it work better than before.”
