I had to change the sediment water filter just now. If I remember correctly, this is the third time I'm changing it.

Sediment Water Filter

A sediment water filter looks like this.

The sediment water filter is the one in white. The water pipe goes into the water container. And the water in the water container goes through the sediment water filter, before going out of it.

So, this is the third time I had to change the sediment water filter, and unlike the second time, which was real smooth, and finished in less than 6 minutes, this one took me nearly one to two hours to complete.

The issue here was that the water container was leaking =8O. I screwed and unscrewed the water container a few times, before I finally got it right.

The water filter must be inserted into the water container. There is a female/male connector there, and it must be inserted properly. The top of the water container had a connector there too, so care must be taken to ensure that both sides of the sediment water container goes into the connector correctly.

After that, the water container must be screwed into the top (which is the one in blue colour, not the background :-P itself)

Steps to take

  1. Turn off the water supply
  2. Turn on the water tap, so that when the water supply is turned on, it is supplying water.
  3. The water tap will leak a while, which is okay.
  4. Unscrew the container from the top, clockwise to open, anti-clockwise to close.
  5. Remove the sediment water filter.
  6. Replace with a new sediment water filter.
  7. Screw back the container slightly, ensuring that the black plastic ring comes into contact with the top.
  8. Turn on the water supply, slightly.
  9. Let water flow into the container until it is full.
  10. Complete screwing the container into the top until no water is leaking.
  11. Turn off the tap!

After changing the filter, if the filter is a high-end water filter, the water will look cloudy. it is normal for the water produced by the new filter to look cloudy, almost like a glass of skim milk. The cloudy appearance is due to very tiny air bubbles in the water. If you fill a clear glass with the cloudy water you can see the tiny air bubbles slowly rise to the top of the glass over several minutes leaving a clear, clean glass of water. The water is perfectly fine to drink. The air in the water is the same air that you are breathing.

This “cloudiness” happens because when the new water filter cartridge is manufactured, the filter is full of air, not water. Also, high end cartridges will filter water to 5 microns. By means of comparison, a human hair is 25 microns in diameter so the filter is full of holes 1/5th the diameter of a human hair. When water first starts to flow through the filter it is pushing the air out creating very tiny (5 micron) air bubbles. Once the filter has become completely saturated and all the air in the filter is gone, the filter will not produce any more cloudy water. Cheap, low grade filters do not create this condition.

Depending on how often the filter us used, it is normal for the filter to produce cloudy water for 1 to 4 weeks. Please remember that this will happen every time the filter cartridge is changed. Unfortunately there is nothing that we or anyone else can do to make it go away or to speed up the saturation process.
