WARNING!!! Oriental Travel Pte Ltd @ Wheelock Place

Went to Borders with my partner yesterday. After a while, I felt hungry, and was on my way to have lunch with my partner, when I was approached by a kid (he's 20 years old), who's working for Oriental Travel Pte Ltd or Orient Travel Pte Ltd.

In short, we opened two lucky draws, and won 2 movie tickets and a digital camera (turns out to be a mini digital camera, actually worth between US$2 to US$50, when I searched on the Internet much later), but we have to attend a presentation lasting at least 75 minutes. Qualifying candidates must earn above a certain figure, have VISA and must be a couple.

So, the presentation went on for more than 75 minutes. A young girl talked to us, and asked what our favourite destinations are, how much we spent on our holidays, etc. The packages are fantastic! By being a member, you can save up to a few thousand per tour. When we asked for the price, the young girl refuses to say, and the manager came over. Even then, the manager didn't disclose the price, but wrote down on a piece of paper the cost of the membership. TO BE A MEMBER, YOU HAVE TO PAY ABOUT $20,000 to $30,000. 50% on that day, and 50% in under 2 weeks. And note, the price is tailored to the answers given in your survey.

And if you don't sign up on the day itself, you must pay much more later! Being a smart person, I said no, we've seen enough and left, with our 2 movie tickets and that small digital camera, which is about the same size as the current Mini VISA!

When I got back to my place, I checked up on the Internet, and came across this link. Basically, it warned people about joining Oriental Travel, because they're cheats! Here's another link. And general blacklisting of companies, here. In this list, the following companies are in Singapore:

  • Emperor Resorts International
  • Interval Resorts Network
  • LRD Consultants
  • Oriental Travel
  • Regency Leisure Department
  • Universal Privilege
  • World Resorts

So, I thought, I better blog about this, so that even if other links are dead for some reason, here's another post. Be forewarned! Do not sign up with Oriental Travel Pte Ltd located at Wheelock Place.

  • Hi All,

How I wish I was bit smart surf the net and find out more b/4 i went down....My partner and me went yesterday and wasted three hrs of our Sat evening yesterday....Thank God we did not sign up....we were invited to attend while shopping in Orchard...they refused to let us know the price of the membership...in fact we did not know that they are selling membership fees......until the last part of the day...when we refuse, they were not happy. They kind of delayed the time for us to collect the gift...maybe they hope that we will get frustrated and leave the office without the gift and the reimbursment of taxifare....but we did not...they did give us mini digital camera.....first of all I am not even sure whether they are allowed to do such a sale.......
  • Dear all,

Please do not waste your time on all these gimmicks such as Free Accomodation/Flights/Digital Camera. These are just "TRICKS" to get hold of you. These are worthless - with loads of TERMS AND CONDITION. And by the way, NOT FREE, you will still need ADMIN FEES and etc.

Unless you are rich and willing to spend at least $17K or more on their membership. Otherwise dont go for the freebies.

    Remorse
  • Why dont someone report them to NATAS?
  • Hi,

I had a call today and my son forewarned about the scam/s and I did not believe him so I surfed the net and manage to get hold of this website in time. Wonder WHY CASE is not acting?
Relevant Singapore Autrhorities should ACT immediately and educate the public and single this particular company or even EXPOSE them outright......I was nearly scammed by a TIMESHARE company under EMPEROR HOLDINGS........REMEMBER NO FREE LUNCH!!!!....SHOP "N" PAY .....no Questions asked??????

  • I'm a victim of Oriental Travel too! But I guess I went far deeper than any of you.

I've always made it a point to travel at least once a year. I signed up the membership in Apr this year. Till now, I wasn't able to use a single of their services or experience anything they had promised!

When I called up, I asked for a quotation and the person said she will call me back. A day passed and no one returned my call. I called the next day, obviously quite crossed. The guy said he'll get the next available person to call me as soon as any of them puts down their phone. No one called again.

Then I threatened to cancel my membership, and immediately, they re-direct me to the QA dept to handle cancellation... with such efficiency and coolness as if they had done this many times before.

Eventually, I decided to give them another chance (I'm so forgiving! Can't believe it!). They finally forwarded me their quotation, and this time, I checked out prices with the airline and other travel agencies. There are better offers out there. So what does Oriental Travel say? Go ahead with those companies!!

So I've spent tens of thousands of dollars just to do what I've done before (ie book from other agencies without joining Oriental Travel)? The "free" accomodations promised were not delivered as well. They said I have to submit and wait for the waiting list. I can't plan my holidays with my kids. You don't have the freedom to say when you can go. On top of that, I tried redeeming in end Jul/early Aug... oredi, they said the accomodations were fully booked and I should wait till next year!

Till now, I can't use any of the free things they promised, on top of that, I had to paid more to go on a same trip. If that's not enuf for you all, I have to endure bad customer service.

    Get out if you can!

  • Hi,

I've just received a mail from Oriental Travel via Jue Shi Marketing. Now they're giving out a Toyota Corolla, 42" Plasma TV, Note Book, and Diamond watch.
The letter said that I've to validate the offer within 48 hours of receiving the letter.

    Beware !!!
